There are very few consumer products made in America today that are genuinely identical to what they were 90 years ago. The Zippo windproof lighter is one of them. Founded in 1932 in Bradford, Pennsylvania — a town that's been home to the company ever since — Zippo has produced over 600 million lighters and backed every single one with a lifetime guarantee. If it breaks for any reason, they fix it free.
That's not marketing. That's the actual policy, applied to actual lighters regardless of age, condition, or where you bought it. It's a level of commitment to product quality that almost no other brand matches. And it's why a Zippo purchased in 1955 can be returned today for free repair.
The Zippo Story
George Blaisdell founded Zippo Manufacturing Company in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1932. The name was inspired by the word "zipper," which Blaisdell thought sounded modern and exciting. The first lighter was based on an Austrian design, but Blaisdell redesigned it completely — adding the hinged lid, the wind-resistant chimney, and the flint wheel that have remained unchanged for nine decades.
Zippo became famous during World War II. American soldiers carried Zippos in every theatre of the war — they were reliable in extreme conditions, available in the PX, and became an emblem of American servicemen worldwide. The military connection gave Zippo an aura that no advertising campaign could have created. By the time the war ended, the Zippo was an icon.
- Founded: 1932, Bradford, Pennsylvania, USA
- Lighters produced: Over 600 million
- Employees: All manufacturing still in Bradford, PA
- Guarantee: Lifetime, unconditional — any defect repaired or replaced free of charge
- Design: Fundamentally unchanged since 1933
"It works. That's the whole story. Every single one, from Bradford, for 90 years. If it doesn't work, they fix it."

How a Zippo Works
The Zippo mechanism is elegantly simple, which is why it hasn't changed. Here's what happens when you strike a Zippo:
- The flint wheel — A serrated steel wheel strikes a flint (a small cylindrical stone) to produce a spark.
- The wick — The spark ignites the wick, which is saturated with lighter fluid (naphtha) from the cotton wadding in the fuel chamber below.
- The chimney — The perforated steel chimney surrounding the wick allows air in from the bottom while deflecting wind from the flame. This is what makes a Zippo windproof.
- The lid — Closing the lid cuts off air supply and extinguishes the flame instantly.
The "click" when opening and closing a Zippo is a side effect of the spring-loaded hinge — and it's become one of the most distinctive sounds in industrial design history.
Refilling: The fuel chamber sits inside the lighter insert, held in by the case. Flip the lighter upside down, pull the insert out, and fill the cotton wadding from the bottom with Zippo premium lighter fluid. One fill lasts approximately one to two weeks of regular use.
Models & Finishes Explained
Zippo produces hundreds of designs, but they all start with the same case in one of a handful of standard finishes:
- High Polish Chrome — Mirror finish, bright silver. The most recognisable Zippo look. Scratches show over time but develop character with age.
- Brushed Chrome — Satin finish, less reflective than high polish. More forgiving to scratches.
- High Polish Brass — Mirror finish, gold tone. Warmer than chrome, develops patina with use.
- Brushed Brass — Satin brass finish. Classic military aesthetic.
- Black Matte — Matte powder coat finish, very practical and understated. The go-to for everyday carry.
- Black Ice — High gloss black finish. Sleek, modern look.
- Black Crackle — Textured crackle paint, the original wartime finish from WWII. Excellent grip.
- Colour Image / Colour Logo — Full-colour designs applied over a base finish using a printing process.
Case sizes: Most Zippos use the standard regular (6-flint) case. Slim cases exist but are less common. All standard Zippo cases take the same fuel and flints.
Classic Zippo Lighters
Zippo High Polish Chrome — Model 250
Zippo
High Polish Chrome — Model 250

The one. If you say "Zippo" and picture a lighter, this is what you're picturing. Model 250 in high polish chrome is the original Zippo look — mirror-bright, satisfying click, windproof flame. It's been in production, essentially unchanged, since the 1930s. Made in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Backed by the lifetime guarantee.
Best for: First Zippo, gift, everyday carry, the purist who wants the real thing.
Zippo Black Matte — Model 218
Zippo
Black Matte — Model 218
Currently out of stock — check back soon
The no-nonsense everyday carry choice. The matte black powder coat finish shows almost no wear, doesn't reflect light, and looks clean in hand or pocket. Same mechanism as all standard Zippos — windproof flame, lifetime guarantee, same satisfying click. If you want a Zippo that's functional above all else, this is the one.
Best for: Daily use, practical users, anyone who doesn't want the show-chrome.
Zippo High Polish Brass — Model 254B
Zippo
High Polish Brass — Model 254B

The solid brass Zippo develops a natural patina over time — the high polish finish gradually deepens and ages in a way that chrome doesn't. Every scratch and wear mark tells the story of where this lighter has been. For collectors and those who appreciate materials that age well, brass is the choice. Heavier and warmer-toned than chrome.
Best for: Collectors, gifts, anyone who appreciates materials that develop character over time.
Zippo 1941 Replica Black Crackle
Zippo
1941 Replica Black Crackle

The 1941 Replica reproduces the exact lighter that Zippo produced for the US military during World War II. Black crackle paint was used during the war because it was non-reflective and provided excellent grip — both useful in a combat environment. The replica preserves every detail of the original case design, including the bottom stamp style from that era. A piece of genuine American manufacturing history.
Best for: History enthusiasts, WWII collectors, anyone who wants the original wartime Zippo.
Zippo Classic Satin Chrome — Model 205
Zippo

Satin chrome splits the difference between high polish and matte — it has the silver tone of chrome without the full mirror finish. Fingerprints and light scratches are far less visible than on high polish, while the lighter still looks refined. An excellent middle-ground choice for daily carry that still looks great.
Best for: Those who like the chrome look but want something more practical for daily use.

A more contemporary take on the Harley collaboration than the traditional designs, and one of the better-looking texture finishes in the Zippo range.
Best for: Harley collectors who prefer modern design over classic styling.

The Flex Neck is a Zippo designed for reach, not pocket carry. The flexible extended neck lets you light candles, BBQ charcoal, fire pits, camp stoves, and anything else where your hand needs to stay away from the flame. Uses the same naphtha fuel as all standard Zippos, same windproof design, but in a format that replaces those thin butane wands that run out of fuel at the worst moment.
Best for: BBQ, candles, fire pits, camp stoves, kitchen use.
Zippo Outdoor Emergency Fire Kit

The Zippo fire kit is an outdoor survival package — includes the fire starter, tinder, and wax-based fire starters in a weatherproof kit. This is the go-bag fire solution: not dependent on lighter fluid, works in wet conditions, and contains everything you need to start a fire when it matters. The mag strike element works at altitude, in rain, and when your regular lighter is exhausted.
Best for: Camping, hiking, emergency preparedness, 4WD touring.
Zippo Outdoor AdjustAFlame Torch with Safety Lock
Zippo
Outdoor AdjustAFlame Torch with Safety Lock
Currently out of stock — check back soon
A butane torch lighter with adjustable flame height and a safety lock. The torch flame is wind-resistant and concentrated — useful for precise lighting, starting a fire in conditions where a standard flame won't hold, or any application requiring high, focused heat. The safety lock prevents accidental ignition in a bag or pocket.
Best for: Camping, bushcraft, anyone who needs a reliable torch in variable conditions.
Collecting Zippos
Zippo collecting is one of the more accessible collector hobbies — the lighters are compact, there are hundreds of thousands of designs over 90 years of production, and the market for rare pieces is genuinely global.
What makes a Zippo valuable to collectors:
- Date codes — Every Zippo has a date code stamped on the bottom. This tells you the exact year and quarter of manufacture. Collectors use this to identify specific production runs.
- Limited editions — Zippo produces genuinely limited runs of specific designs. These can appreciate significantly over time.
- Town and date — "Town and Date" Zippos were made during WWII with the soldier's name, hometown, and date engraved. Original T&D lighters are among the most sought-after Zippo collectibles.
- Advertising Zippos — Old advertising designs (gas stations, airlines, cigarette brands) have a dedicated collector following.
- Condition — Unlike many collectibles, Zippos don't need to be unfired to be valuable. A well-used lighter with genuine patina is often more desirable than an unused one.
New collectors often start with the classic chrome or brass models — they're inexpensive, widely available, and the best way to understand what makes a Zippo a Zippo before hunting for rarer pieces.
Fuel & Maintenance
A Zippo needs three things to keep working: fuel, flints, and occasional wick replacement.
Lighter Fluid (Naphtha)
Zippo lighters use naphtha lighter fluid — the brand's own Zippo Premium fluid is the recommended choice. Generic naphtha also works. Fill through the bottom of the insert by pulling it from the case, lifting the felt pad, and saturating the cotton wadding. Don't overfill. One full fill lasts approximately one to two weeks of daily use.
Zippo Butane Insert for Blue Flame
Zippo
Butane Insert — Single Blue Flame
Currently out of stock — check back soon
One of the less-known Zippo features: the standard insert can be swapped for a butane insert that turns your Zippo case into a blue flame lighter. The butane insert drops straight into your existing Zippo case, refills with standard butane, and produces a clean, wind-resistant blue flame rather than the classic yellow naphtha flame. The butane flame is odourless, which some users prefer. The case — with all its aesthetic value — stays the same.
Best for: Cigar smokers who prefer butane, anyone who wants a cleaner flame without changing their lighter case.
Flints
The flint in a Zippo is a small cylindrical stone that produces sparks when struck by the wheel. They last approximately 5–10 fills of lighter fluid, depending on use. Replacement is simple: unscrew the flint spring from the bottom of the insert, drop in a new flint, and replace the spring. Always keep a spare flint — they're very small and easily lost.
Wick
The wick needs replacing when it becomes short, blackened, or no longer draws fuel effectively. Pull the old wick from the top of the insert, thread a new wick down through the cotton wadding, and trim to approximately 6mm above the chimney. Pre-cut wicks are available from Zippo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Zippo lighters genuine if bought in Australia?
Yes — all Zippo lighters sold by HomeandRoam are genuine Zippo products manufactured in Bradford, Pennsylvania, USA. Every genuine Zippo has a date code stamped on the bottom of the case. Fake Zippos exist but are identifiable by the absence of the date code, inferior hinge quality, and the lack of Zippo branding on the insert.
Does the Zippo lifetime guarantee apply in Australia?
Yes — the Zippo lifetime guarantee is unconditional and worldwide. If your Zippo develops a mechanical defect for any reason, Zippo will repair or replace it free of charge. Send it directly to Zippo's repair clinic in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Note that the guarantee covers mechanical faults, not cosmetic wear or fuel-related issues.
Why does my Zippo smell of lighter fluid?
This is normal for naphtha lighters. The cotton wadding holds a reservoir of lighter fluid, which evaporates slowly even when the lighter isn't in use. Naphtha has a distinctive petrol-like smell. If the smell bothers you, the Zippo butane insert is odourless and works in the same case.
How long does a Zippo lighter fuel last?
A full fill of lighter fluid lasts approximately one to two weeks with daily use. The fuel also evaporates slowly over time, so a lighter that's filled but not used for a few weeks may be low or empty. This is a characteristic of naphtha lighters generally. Some users carry a small bottle of fuel for longer trips.
What is the difference between Zippo models?
The mechanism inside every standard Zippo is identical — the same flint wheel, wick, and fuel chamber that Zippo has used since 1933. The differences between models are purely aesthetic: the finish (chrome, brass, matte, colour), any engraving or printed design, and whether the case is regular or slim size. All standard Zippos use the same flints, fuel, and replacement wicks.
Do you offer free shipping on Zippo lighters in Australia?
Yes — HomeandRoam offers free shipping on all orders over $100 across Australia. Individual Zippo lighters are generally priced below $100, so combining them with other purchases is the best way to qualify for free shipping.
